IITians are hired over B-School grads!

IITians may have very good placement opportunities this year as many ecommerce giants and startups have decided to hire engineers for both technical and non-technical posts. These companies are looking for engineers more precisely for non-tech job roles such as business finance, procurement, marketing and business operations however, usually B-school graduates are preferred for these kind of roles.

Some of these ecommerce giants include Flipkart, Jabong, ShopClues and Bewkoof.com whereas Grofers, Ola, OYO Rooms, PepperTap and CarDekho.com are a few startups that are going to participate in this hiring race. Around 400 companies have already registered with IIT-Bombay’s placement cell for recruitment this year which is almost 25% more than the last year. Most of them are ecommerce giants and startups. Surprisingly, the startup firms and ecommerce majors are going to offer packages of over Rs. 18-20 Lakhs, as competitive as the age-old firms. Along with Ola, even Uber is going to take its first step towards IIT placements with well-paid offers for IITians.

Engineers tend to be data-driven and younger in comparison to B-school graduates which is why they can easily slip into the start-up environ. This may be the reason behind hiring engineers over MBAs. According to Amit Mathur – Head of Talent Acquisition at Ola Cabs, IIT graduates will be hired for data-driven roles and corporate non-technical functions. This is the same scene with CarDekho.com as well.

Flipkart, Snapdeal and ShopClues are also not behind in hiring engineers. ShopClues will hire double the IIT grads than they did last year for site merchandising, analytics and monetization. As stated by the Head HR at Jabong, they (Jabong) would need more engineers this year in managerial and non-tech functions. Prabhkiran Singh – Co-founder of Bewkoof.com (a renowned ecommerce player) also said, “I would anytime prefer an engineer fresh from an IIT or with two years of work experience than an engineer with two years of MBA.” According to him, it’s a huge payout to have a top hire from IIM or ISB, there is no much benefit.

As per the hiring companies’ managers, IIM graduates are not as flexible as the engineers. They have a predefined career path and profile which is not always possible with a startup. Also, younger IIT grads are more likely to take risks than the B-school grads. Moreover, a Customer Relationship Manager or a Marketing Head or an Operations Head who is an engineer would be more capable to convey the customer perspective to the tech team than an MBA. And by hiring engineers over IIM graduates, companies could save up to rupees 6 Lakhs every year.

So to sum up everything, as per the hiring companies it is more beneficial for ecommerce companies and startups to choose engineers instead of MBAs.
